Window Treatments FAQs

Answers to frequently asked questions.

How can I tell if my blinds are safe for children and pets?

If your blinds or window treatments have looped cords, they pose a strangulation hazard to children and pets. Most blinds and shades made more than a decade or go have unsafe cord systems. The best option for homes with children and pets (or any home where they may visit) is a cordless system.

What is UV protection?

Ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight can cause furniture and floors to fade or darken over time. Many window treatments can lessen the effect by protecting against UV damage.

How can I remove dirt that remains after dusting?

Small spots and marks may be removed with a soft, clean cloth or sponge moistened with water and a mild detergent if needed. For larger areas, some honeycomb, vinyl and aluminum blinds may be tub washed in warm water and mild detergent. Check manufacturer’s directions before immersing your window treatments. Professional cleaning may also be an option.

If I get shutters or blinds, will I be losing my view?

Shutters provide maximum privacy when closed, but provide good view-through simply by opening the vanes. As a rule, the larger the slats on your blind or shutter, the less they will obstruct your view. Most shutters and blinds can also be fully opened to offer a complete view. Some also have opening options that allow privacy below while admitting light and a view of the trees above.

Are window treatments easy to install?

It depends on the window treatment and your carpentry and mechanical skills. If you are comfortable measuring accurately, locating supports within your walls as needed and using a drill, you may be able to tackle many window treatment installations. Faulty installation may void manufacturers’ warranties, however.
